RALEIGH -- If you slept in this morning, you missed the snow. (That will teach you to lay off the snooze button.)
Light snow fell across the Triangle for about two hours this morning. But by 8 a.m. the big flakes were gone, and no more snow is expected the rest of the day, according to Brandon Vincent, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
The ground temperature was 38 to 48 degrees, so there was no accumulation except some light dusting in grassy and elevated areas like cars, he said. The roads remained clear.
During rush hour, there were just a few minor accidents reported, according to E.W. Barrington, a Highway Patrol dispatcher, who added there were fewer accidents this morning than on mornings with dry conditions.
Snow was also reported early today in points west like Boone and Greensboro, which could see up to a half an inch of snow.
A strong cold front will create gusty winds through this afternoon. Combined with dry, windy conditions from earlier in the week, authorities are advising residents in central North Carolina that burning dry leaves is not recommended. Despite the precipitation, the state faces the threat of wildfires because of high winds.
Highs will only reach the 40s on Friday and Saturday with lows in the 20s.
