Death by Taser, in a padded cell, caught on camera

Brandon Bethea died in March 2011 after being shot with a Taser by a Harnett County detention officer; no one was charged with a crime

A surveillance video released by the county 5 years after his death shows a shackled Bethea backing into the corner of a padded cell when the officer fired

County officials paid Bethea’s family $350,000 and bound them to silence with a strict settlement agreement

A potentially disastrous Medicaid move

The last time our state considered a legislative fix for Medicaid was in 1996, when a hospital consortium attempted to convert Medicaid into a for-profit managed-care system. Physicians bonded together to convince the General Assembly that the Community Care of NC program was a better option for our state, our patients and providers. It is not too late for the General Assembly to rethink its potentially disastrous proposal.
