Apartment boom poised to reshape Raleigh, Durham downtowns

When SkyHouse, the 23-story luxury apartment building, opens in downtown Raleigh next month, it will offer tenants sweeping views. In Raleigh, the number of high-end apartment units within a mile of downtown will double to nearly 3,000 over during the next two years. In Durham, a wave of new apartment communities in downtown and along Ninth Street is expected to more than double the population, which is now about 1,500.

The construction accident in Raleigh that killed three men and badly injured a fourth involved mast climbers, a type of scaffolding that is generally regarded as safe but that requires special training and expertise to install and operate safely. Labor advocates say Latino workers, on whom the building industry relies, don’t always get the training and safety equipment they need on the job.
