NC lawyers face bar complaints for Racial Justice Act work

Gretchen Engel, director of the Durham-based Center for Death Penalty Litigation, and Cassandra Stubbs, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union Capital Punishment Project, were among a team of attorneys who used the short-lived law to convert a North Carolina death row inmate’s sentence in 2012 to life without possibility for parole.

Tillis and Burr vote for same-sex marriage benefits

North Carolina Sens. Thom Tillis and Richard Burr were among 11 Republicans who voted with Democrats Thursday night for a non-binding budget amendment that would give legally married same-sex spouses Social Security and veterans benefits they have earned, and ensure them equal treatment under the law.

Gas tax ‘cut’ will boost NC DOT revenues by $400 million

House and Senate leaders announced a deal Thursday that will gradually cut a few pennies off the state gas and diesel fuel tax over the next two years – starting next week – and cancel a much more substantial cut that would have cost the state Department of Transportation hundreds of jobs and more than $400 million in revenues.
