Find Memorial Day services, ceremonies this weekend

Memorial Day began as Decoration Day, recognizing the family tradition of placing flowers on graves to honor the soldiers, sailors and Marines of the Civil War. John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union soldiers, made these celebrations official in 1868, establishing May 30 as the day for veterans to honor their dead comrades.

‘Pop’ Cashion excelled as historian, friend to many

Bits and pieces of North Carolina’s past dot its highways in the form of historic markers. These plaques tell us that on Indian Town Road south of Shawboro, Thomas McKnight, colonial merchant and legislator, a Loyalist during the Revolution, operated a large shipyard nearby. It’s a small nugget of history, but Jerry Cashion felt each morsel from the state’s past was relevant in its own way, and worth remembering.



Police in MO say they killed double homicide suspect James Horn

James Barton Horn Jr., wanted for killing a woman and her teenage son in Clinton, Missouri, was shot and killed Saturday by police in that state. Federal authorities had sought to prevent his release from a prior prison sentence by having him declared as “sexually dangerous.” But a federal judge in North Carolina denied the request.
