Wake County schools’ Good Friday, Saturday makeup plan draws protests

Wake County's plan to have students attend makeup days on Good Friday and two Saturdays has drawn angry backlash from parents, students, teachers and community members. Some critics contend that having classes on Good Friday unfairly forces Christians to choose between school and their faith. Other critics say holding classes on Saturdays infringes on family, work and other commitments.

Garner, Millbrook lead N&O boys’ basketball rankings

Garner and Millbrook, both bound for state 4A quarterfinal games on Thursday, are Nos. 1 and 2 in The News & Observer high school boys’ basketball rankings. Chapel Hill, which won the NCHSAA 3A girls’ championship in 2014, is the new leader in the girls’ rankings. NC lawmakers explain votes on key homeland department funding bill

A partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security was averted on Tuesday when the House of Representatives voted 257-167 to pass full funding for the rest of the fiscal year. Most Democrats and 75 Republicans, including Speaker John Boehner, voted for it. The Senate had already passed the measure with bipartisan backing. President Barack Obama is expected to sign it.
