Regal buys up theaters

This week, several area movie theaters will change hands as part of Regal Entertainment Group's purchase of Consolidated Theatres.

Regal, a Tennessee chain that already owns three movie theaters in Raleigh and Garner, will be taking over the Crossroads 20 in Cary, the Raleigh Grande Cinema, the Beaver Creek 12 in Apex and the White Oak Village 14 in Garner.

Southpoint Cinemas in Durham, which was also managed by Consolidated, was not part of the deal and will continue operating as usual for now.

Representatives from Regal did not return my phone calls inquiring about whether there would be any big cosmetic or operational changes to the theaters they are buying.

At least I can tell you that those theaters will be closed Thursday for the ownership handoff. It's safe to assume the signs will be changing soon.

On one hand, you could view the change as a reduction in the number of competitors in our market, which is never a good thing. But on the other hand, this could be a good thing because it gives people more options for using Regal gift cards and more opportunities to participate in the Regal Crown Club loyalty program.

In Apex, Lights Unlimited Inc. will relocate at the end of May or the beginning of June to the Lawrence Crossing shopping center at N.C. 55 and Perry Road. Its existing space on Merchant Drive is being turned into a car lot.

In Fuquay-Varina, Hit and Run is open at 208 Technology Park Lane. Featuring an indoor basketball court and batting cages, Hit and Run offers training packages, party packages and lessons. ... There's also a new baseball academy called K-Zone Academy in Apex at 733 Center St.

In Durham, Dickey's Barbecue Pit will open at 5318 New Hope Commons Drive on Tuesday. Dickey's also will open a store next year in Morrisville's Grace Park at Davis Drive and Morrisville Carpenter Road.

In Raleigh, the Fresh Market is moving from Falls Village to Sutton Square this week. It will close Monday at 5 p.m. and reopen in Sutton Square, at Spring Forest and Falls of Neuse roads, Wednesday. ... Also at Sutton Square, the Original SoupMan -- which is sure to please fans of "Seinfeld" -- is on track to open in a month. ... And the Chapel Hill Fresh Market at 1200 Raleigh Road will open in July.

OTHER ITEMS: In Clayton, hair salon Studio 216 closed at 216 W. Main St. ... In North Raleigh, the Prime Only restaurant at 13200 Strickland Road closed. The downtown Raleigh Prime Only is under separate ownership and remains open. ... In Durham, Rita's Water Ice will open in Hope Valley Commons off N.C. 54 later this year. ... In Raleigh's Mini City area, The Korean Steakhouse is open at 4614 Capital Blvd. ... In Durham, the Just Dogs Gourmet dog treat store in The Streets at Southpoint will close Sunday. That means the Crabtree Valley Mall location in Raleigh is the only Just Dogs store left in North Carolina.
