Raleigh's Crabtree Valley Mall is one of the most constantly changing retail properties in this area.

But few of the mall's tenants have been around long enough to have witnessed most of the changes firsthand.

Luggage & Leather is one rare exception.

Opened in 1977, just five years after the mall opened, the store has seen the numerous comings and goings over the years.

But now we add it to the "goings" list.

Owners Brenda Hardison and Kevan Burnett are closing this spring. The lease goes through April, but if the inventory is sold before then, the store may close earlier.

Burnett declined to go into the "many reasons" for the closure but said sales slowed over the past few years as more luggage sales began happening online.

The business, which was started by Hardison's parents, once had a store in Charlotte and one in Tennessee. But those were sold, and the lone remaining store is the original one at Crabtree.

"We're not moving, just moving on," Burnett said. "This is not really the end but more of a new beginning. We'll probably keep doing a little business on our Web site (www.luggage-and-leather.com) and maybe some eBay stuff."

The store was originally located on the mall's second level near Sears. You can find it now on the first floor near Belk.

... Also at Crabtree, Zales is moving to the spaces that used to be occupied by Friedman's Jewelers and Babbage's.

An aquarium and pond maintenance company that has been in business since 1998 is opening a showroom today at 4817 Hargrove Road in Raleigh. Aquatic Creations Group has aquarium exhibits for clients or small school groups. It also sells aquariums and aquarium and pond supplies. For now, it's open Thursday through Saturday.

LA Boxing, a chain of boxing and martial arts gyms, is opening its first North Carolina site on March 1 at 935 N. Harrison Ave. in Cary.

In Durham's Northgate Mall, the Bull City Western apparel store will close at the end of this month. The neighboring Hakky Shoe Repair store, which is under the same ownership, will remain open and will still sell Western boots, hats, buckles and other accessories.

Premier Soccer has moved within the Leesville Town Center, at the intersection of I-540 and Leesville Road. The new store is twice the size of the old one. There's also a Premier Soccer store at Crossroads in Cary.

Other items: At Cary Towne Center, Hollister and Mimi's Cafe are open. ... In Cary, K&S Cigars moved from Chatham Square to West Park Place, at 2722 N.C. 55. ... In Garner, Down Under Saltwater Fish & Coral is relocating to a larger space at 1543 U.S. 70. The store opens Friday. The old store farther down U.S. 70 near Agri Supply will remain open until then. ... In Raleigh, Atlantic Smoothies is open at 4701 Atlantic Ave.
