ROXBORO -- Georgia-Pacific said Thursday that it is laying off 120 workers at a Roxboro plant -- the latest casualties of the slowdown in new-home construction.

The workers, who make up 60 percent of the plant, primarily made wood beams used in residential construction across the country. Roxboro is located about 50 miles north of Raleigh, in Person County.

But as the mortgage crisis has swelled the number of unsold homes, builders have scaled back, thus reducing the need for building supplies. Construction of single-family homes fell to a 26-year low in September, according to the Commerce Department.

Raleigh's Stock Building Supply recently announced it will cut 3,000 jobs and Silver Line is shutting its Durham window plant, laying off 428.

The Roxboro cuts will be complete by the end of the month, said Julie Davis, a spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific. About 40 employees will remain.
