Real estate executive promoted to president

Grubb & Ellis/Thomas Linderman Graham, one of the Triangle's biggest commercial real estate services firms, is shuffling its upper management roles.

John B. Linderman Jr., who was an executive vice president of the Raleigh firm, has been promoted to president. Linderman, 52, takes the place of Rex Thomas, who has served in that role since 2000.

"John and I have always functioned as co-CEOs, and this change reflects John's key leadership role in the company," Thomas, 62, said in a prepared statement. "I thought it was time for a younger guy to be seen in the proper light. I assure you, I am not retiring."

Thomas will continue to serve as the brokerage's chairman and chief executive. Linderman will assume management of daily operations as chief operating officer.

The firm grew out of Highwoods Properties in 1997, when Thomas purchased the Raleigh real estate investment trust's third-party services division. It operated as Thomas Commercial until merging with Linderman's firm, Grubb & Ellis/Vector, in 2000. The partners merged with Graham Associates in 2005 to form Grubb & Ellis/Thomas Linderman Graham. The company has 65 employees and manages 3.5 million square feet of commercial space.
