LAURINBURG - Eaton Corp. plans to close a golf grip factory in Laurinburg and put 76 people out of work.

In a letter filed with the state Department of Commerce, the company said that it will "be relocating the manufacturing activities of this location" and that all workers involved in production "will be affected."

The layoffs will begin June 23, the company wrote.

Eaton's decision is a blow to Scotland County, which already has the highest unemployment rate in the state. In March, the county jobless rate was 9.6 percent, according to figures released Friday.

Eaton's golf grip unit is the world's largest maker of such products, with operations on five continents.
