Stimulus checks are short

WASHINGTON -- As many as 350,000 households are not getting the $300 per child refund owed as part of economic stimulus rebate payments, the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday.

The IRS says taxpayer errors and problems with commercial tax preparation software were responsible for the problem, which affects a tiny percentage of the 130 million taxpayers expected to benefit from the refunds the government began sending out last month.

A spokesman said the IRS will send letters to those who missed out on the refund and that checks for the child credit will be mailed in July.

Unifi leaving Va. for Yadkinville

STAUNTON, Va. -- About 145 workers will lose their jobs when Unifi, a yarn maker, closes its Staunton plant in September.

But Staunton's pain is Yadkinville's gain.

The textile manufacturer will consolidate its operations in Yadkinville in Western North Carolina. Chief Financial Officer Ron Smith says overhead costs and an increase in freight fees fueled the decision to close the plant. Formerly operated as Fiberspun, the plant has been a Staunton staple since the 1960s. The plant shrank from 500 to fewer than 200 in the 1990s. Workers are being offered a chance to relocate to Yadkinville.
