In the past year, GlaxoSmithKline has stepped up its restructuring efforts:
SUMMER 2007: Following a review of its businesses, GSK prepares for job cuts. Employees in targeted areas must interview for remaining jobs.
OCTOBER 2007: GSK announces a three-year restructuring plan to save up to $1.4 billion annually. Executives expect the biggest job cuts in sales and manufacturing.
FEBRUARY: An undisclosed number of jobs are cut at the drug maker's U.S. headquarters in Research Triangle Park.
MAY: GSK cuts 70 jobs at its Zebulon manufacturing plant in May. Jean-Paul Garnier, the GSK chief executive who initiated the restructuring, retires, and Andrew Witty takes over as the new CEO.
JUNE: Half of about 500 scientists working on cardiovascular and metabolic drugs in Philadelphia and RTP expect layoff notices.
