Despite rumors that it was closed, downtown restaurant Yancy’s was open for business today and serving lunch.
The Cajun restaurant, which opened in late 2006, was a highly touted part of downtown Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street Mall revitalization.
Barbara Jones, manager on duty at the restaurant today, said some former employees who were recently fired were spreading rumors about the restaurant and had appeared in some local media reports.
In a written statement issued by General Manager Jewel Hester, Yancy’s said “allowing these few people to misuse the media for selfish reasons is wrong.”
YancyJazz LLP, the corporation that is responsible for the restaurant’s lease, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, but the restaurant has remained open since then.
The restaurant is named for Harvey Yancey, who was the chef at Black Dog Cafe in Raleigh’s City Market in the 1990s and Yancey’s Jazz & Blues Cafe, which closed in 2003.
Despite Yancy’s financial difficulties, Hester gave no indication that the restaurant would close in the future. “We look forward to continuing to provide quality entertainment and good food and large times for our customers,” she said.
