HOLLY SPRINGS -- A nonprofit hospital chain announced plans this afternoon to build a 46-bed facility in Holly Springs, creating new competition for the Triangle’s major medical providers.
Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, already has nine hospitals in North Carolina, mostly in the Charlotte and Triad areas.
If Novant wins approval from state regulators, the Holly Springs hospital would employ more than 200 workers.
Novant plans to apply for state permission next month. The state keeps tight control on large medical projects to help keep health costs down.
The hospital would include 46 private rooms, maternity services, a 24-hour emergency room and other services.
A news release described the project as "a major new development project for a critical community facility."
It will be the second largest private employer in the town after the build-out of the Novartis vaccine manufacturing plant, which is under construction, town officials said.
