Chris Viehbacher, the top ranked executive at GlaxosmithKline's U.S. headquarters in Research Triangle Park, will become chief executive of Sanofi-Aventis.
Effective Dec. 1, Viehbacher will replace Gerard Le Fur, who was on the job for just 18 months at the French drugmaker. Le Fur will continue in an advisory role.
Viehbacher, who was passed over for the top job at GSK last year, announced Monday that he was leaving the British drugmaker effective Dec. 1. He already resigned from the board of directors.
