ADHD drug performs well, testing shows

closeDURHAM -- An experimental drug developed by a small Durham company to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children helped improve ADHD symptoms in a study and produced no significant side effects.
A preliminary analysis of the study of 228 children released Wednesday is good news for Addrenex Pharmaceuticals, which hopes to win regulatory approval for the drug next year, CEO Moise Khayrallah said. The treatment, known as Clonicel, is a version of a hypertension medicine that counters the effect of the stress hormone adrenaline.
Addrenex will market the drug with Sciele Pharma, an Atlanta company. The companies are conducting other studies of Clonicel.

ADHD makes it difficult for children and teens to focus and pay attention. An estimated 4.4 million children ages 4 to 17 have been diagnosed with the disorder, and 2.5 million are receiving treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
