The owner of La Conexión, the Triangle's first Spanish-language newspaper, has sold the 13-year-old weekly.
Michael Leary Sr. announced the sale in today's edition. His open letter to readers said publishing a weekly newspaper had become a "heartache."
Leary, 46, sold the tabloid to a friend who was among La Conexión's first advertisers: Terence McEnally III, a Raleigh lawyer who represents Hispanic clients.
The sale price was not disclosed. The free newspaper prints 20,000 copies a week.
Leary said that McEnally has superior resources to keep the paper going.
La Conexión has suffered a decline in advertising at a time of increasing costs. Some businesses are unwilling to advertise and be seen as catering to Hispanics at a time when illegal immigration has become a political flashpoint, Leary said.
Leary has not decided what he'll do next.
