MORRISVILLE -- Drug development company Phase Bioscience has named biotechnology industry heavy hitter Craig Rosen its executive chairman.

Rosen, 50, is former president and chief scientific officer of Human Genome Sciences and co-founder, chief scientific officer and executive chairman of CoGenesys, which Teva Biopharmaceuticals acquired for $400 million earlier this year.

Rosen, who got to know Phase Bio CEO Chris Prior when Human Genome Sciences acquired a company founded by Prior, said he is impressed by Phase Bio's technology and its drugs, which are in preclinical development.

"I'm more than a chairman, just going to board meetings," said Rosen. "I have an interest in this technology. I want to see it develop. Hopefully, I can use my contacts to bring these drugs along."

Founded in 2002, Phase Bio has 17 employees and has raised $8 million in venture capital to date. After hiring Prior in April, the company switched focus from providing services to biotech companies to developing drugs of its own.
