RALEIGH -- Time Warner Cable, the Triangle's cable-TV provider, will introduce 20 new high-definition channels during the next several months, starting Wednesday.

The channels will be available to customers who subscribe to Time Warner's digital tier of service and own a TV capable of receiving high-definition signals. Included are Discovery Channel, History Channel, Animal Planet and CNN.

The expansion will nearly double Time Warner's current HD menu of 28 channels. The company has about 3.8 million HD subscribers nationwide, out of 14.7 million customers, said spokeswoman Melissa Buscher. Time Warner is trying to beef up its HD offerings to compete with satellite rivals and new TV service from telephone companies such as AT&T.
