WRAL, the Triangle’s CBS affiliate and top-ranked TV station for news, named Steven D. Hammel as its new general manager and vice president.

Hammel starts Nov. 10. He replaces Jim Hefner, who stepped down in May after six years as general manager.

“We’re excited to have Steve join the team as we move into the digital transition,” said Jim Goodmon, president of WRAL parent Capitol Broadcasting, in a prepared statement. “News and local programming will be more important than ever in the future and Steve brings the experience and commitment to meet the challenge.”

Hammel previously ran news departments at TV stations in Syracuse and Rochester, N.Y., Dallas, St. Louis and Washington. For the past five years, he has been general manager of the CBS affiliate in Phoenix.

He is a graduate of Syracuse University.

“For years I’ve always admired WRAL’s strong news tradition and cutting-edge leadership in technology. It will be my privilege to lead such a dedicated group of professionals,” Hammel said in a statement.
