RALEIGH -- Citing business competition, telecommunications giant Verizon has cut jobs during the past several weeks in Cary, Durham and other locations around the state.
The company won't release details, but it acknowledged Tuesday that it had reduced staff through voluntary buyouts and layoffs at its Verizon Business operations center in Cary and at the Verizon Telecom business unit in Durham. A call center in Wilmington was not affected.
The company employs more than 4,500 people statewide, including about 1,800 in Cary. Spokesman Harry Mitchell said that despite the recent cuts, employment levels at the Cary facility could increase in the next 12 months.
Verizon hired 100,000 workers nationwide in the past three years as it competed against rivals AT&T, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile to expand its network, roll out high-speed Internet and provide television services. Mitchell said the company must constantly adapt to dynamic conditions as some business operations grow and others shrink.
