Paul K. Sun Jr. of Ellis & Winters in Raleigh has been elected to The American Law Institute, a group of judges, lawyers and law professors from all areas of the U.S. and other countries. ALI members are selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.

Frank Princiotta, director of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Environmental Protection Agency, won an award from the Triangle Area Research Directors Council for his service as a past chairperson and presenter and for his dedicated committee work.

Edwards Brothers has received chain-of-custody certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative for both its Ann Arbor, Mich., and Lillington, N.C., manufacturing facilities. To become certified, a company must have a tracking system in place that identifies and tracks the amount of certified, uncertified, and recycled content in the forest products it uses. Edwards Brothers is a book, journal and catalog manufacturing firm.

J. Rives Manning Jr., of McCoy-Hackney Insurance Agency in Roanoke Rapids has been named Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina's 2008 Agent of the Year. The award recognizes the agent who has demonstrated outstanding service to his or her agency, professional association, the insurance industry, community and family.

Angela Byrd, senior interior designer and associate at FreemanWhite in Raleigh, was featured in an article published in Medical Construction & Design magazine on the topic of lighting alternatives for health care facilities.

Russell Rawlings, communications director for the N.C. Bar Association in Cary, received the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity's Delta Beta Xi Award, which is presented annually for sustained alumni service to only 10 Alpha Sigma Phi alumni nationwide.

Mark J. Ratain, a professor at the University of Chicago, received the Award for Clinical Service by the Institute for Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy at UNC-Chapel Hill. The award honors a person who has made significant contributions to the advancement of individualized therapy in clinical practice.

Jack Hoile, a retirement planning specialist with Legacy Wealth Strategies and financial professional with AXA Advisors in Raleigh, completed a training program on advanced investment and wealth management strategies at the AXA Institute.

Shayne C. Gad, owner of Gad Consulting Services, a toxicology consulting company in Cary, received the Lifetime Contribution Award from the American College of Toxicology at its annual conference in Tucson, Ariz.

Eighteen attorneys from Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog were selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2009 edition. Sixteen were from the Raleigh office.
