DURHAM -- Quintiles Transnational, a Durham company that helps drug-makers test and sell new medicines, has bought Targeted Molecular Diagnostics, an Illinois laboratory, to expand its ability to test cancer-fighting drugs.

TMD's technology will help Quintiles' customers better understand how their drugs work and in which populations of patients they're most likely to perform best.

Quintiles employs more than 22,000, including about 2,000 in the Triangle. The company declined to release financial terms of the deal.
