MORRISVILLE -- DHL Express will lay off as many as 23 Wake County workers next month as it ends U.S. operations.

The company will permanently close a facility at 5025 Departure Drive in Raleigh, putting three people out of work. It will cut as many as 20 jobs at 400 Kittyhawk Drive in Morrisville.

The job reductions will take place during a two-week period beginning Jan. 23, according to a notice filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce. Drivers, dock workers and service agents are among those affected.

DHL Express is a division of Germany's Deutsche Post, Europe's largest postal service. It said in November that it would stop trying to compete with FedEx and United Parcel Service, which dominate overnight delivery service in the U.S. DHL's decision will eliminate 14,900 jobs nationwide.
