RALEIGH -- Red Hat has named veteran Intel executive Greg Symon, 49, vice president and general manager of North American sales.

Symon held a variety of positions during his 22 years at Intel. Most recently he was senior managing director and founder of Intel's global software relations organization, where he was focused on developing and maintaining global relationships with partners and vendors.

"His extensive experience in the software industry in combination with his proven leadership skills make Greg ideally suited to drive Red Hat's sales strategy," Alex Pinchev, Red Hat's executive vice president, said in a prepared statement. Raleigh-based Red Hat is the world's largest distributor of the Linux computer-operating system.

Symon has a bachelor's degree in marketing/management from Western Connecticut State University, where he founded the school's American Marketing Association chapter.
