Social Security leases RTP space

Highwoods Properties announced Wednesday that the Social Security Administration has leased 68,000 square feet of office space in Research Triangle Park.

The space is in Highwoods' Pamlico office building. Highwoods leased the space to the General Services Organization for use by the SSA. The deal was a 10-year lease that brings Pamlico's occupancy to 95.1 percent.

The GSA's Defense Logistics Information Service already has a presence in RTP. The service provides IT solutions for the Defense Department and other federal agencies.

Others are less sure.

The U.S. General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, recently told a congressional subcommittee that Social Security might have difficulty meeting its own timetables for automating its disability claims process. That includes testing one piece of the process in North Carolina, an effort that got under way last week.

Counties may scrub online ID details

Several Triangle counties will be pulling personal information from public records they post on the Internet, thanks to a bill that passed the legislature this week.

The bill allows, but does not require, county officials to remove Social Security numbers from online records, where they can fall prey to identity thieves. Registers of deeds in Johnston and Orange counties say they will pay a vendor to screen information now online and remove any personal identification numbers.

Wake Register of Deeds Laura Riddick said it would cost an estimated $2 million to redact all the records the county has online, and her office does not have the money now. She said her office already has the capacity to handle requests on an individual basis.
