WHAT ARE WEBKINZ?
Webkinz are plush stuffed animals produced by a Canadian company, Ganz.
There are 46 Webkinz and 28 smaller Lil'Kinz. Webkinz retail for about $12, and Lil'Kinz are a few dollars less.
Each animal comes with a code that the child can use to register the animal on the Webkinz Web site. Once registered, the child can name the animal and begin caring for it online.
Children are responsible for feeding the pet and taking care of its needs. They play educational games to earn "Kinzcash," which they can use to buy their Web-kinz gifts and items for their virtual homes. The virtual world helps teach children math and money skills.
The toys have become a hot fad in limited supply. The result has been a frenzy similar to past toy crazes such as Beanie Babies, with some children collecting 15 or more pets, stores running out and scalpers selling Webkinz on eBay.
