Raleigh lawyer Joseph B. Cheshire V assumed the presidency of the N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers at the group's recent convention in Sunset Beach. Cheshire, a criminal defense lawyer, represented one of the former Duke lacrosse players who were exonerated of charges of assaulting a stripper at a team party.
Cheshire vowed to strengthen the group's network of lawyers across North Carolina, empower its younger members, and champion its legislative efforts, according to a news release. He also vowed to promote unity among the group's members, who represent criminal defendants, injured workers, and people hurt by medical malpractice or faulty consumer products, among other individuals. Cheshire, a fifth-generation lawyer, began practicing criminal law in Raleigh in 1973.
Personal injury lawyer Margaret S. "Peggy" Abrams, a partner at Abrams & Abrams Law Firm in Raleigh, was named president-elect. She will succeed Cheshire in June 2008.
