FUQUAY-VARINA -- As the town of Fuquay-Varina grows, so does its number of retail options.

The latest example: a 92,601-square-foot Kohl's department store that is planned for a swatch of land south of Main Street.

The new Kohl's will anchor a shopping center called the Shoppes at Lakestone Commons.

The center will be across the road from other recent commercial additions, including a Dunkin' Donuts-Baskin Robbins store, a Chick-fil-A and an Applebee's.

It is also just over a mile from the town's Wal-Mart.

The shopping center fits in with the town's existing development plan, said planning director Michael Sorensen. Plans for the area that the center is in call for a mix of homes and commercial uses.

"This is how it was all laid out," he said. "The property was all zoned to accommodate things like this."

So far, Kohl's is the only named tenant for the 165,000-square-foot shopping center. Site plans submitted to the town show spaces for four other stores.

Both Kohl's and the center's developer, Continental Properties of Wisconsin, declined to comment on the project.

No cost estimate was available for the center Thursday, but Sorensen said the town's planning department generally takes about 21 days to process a submitted site plan.

After that, he said, the developer will need to get the proper county permits before beginning construction.

If it is approved, it will become Continental Properties' first retail project in the state.
