Red Hat announced today that it bought Richmond, Va.-based software maker Amentra for an undisclosed sum.

Red Hat officials said the purchase of the 140-employee company will complement its JBoss middleware division, which sells business software.

Amentra, which has offices in Washington, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Tampa and Richmond, makes software that integrates various business processes.

Raleigh-based Red Hat is the world’s largest maker of Linux-based software for business operating systems and a competitor of Microsoft.
