Tekelec tops forecasts

Morrisville technology company Tekelec reported strong fourth-quarter earnings but warned that product orders have begun to fall off during the recession. Tekelec makes software that telecommunications companies use to set up phone connections and transmit data.

The company issued earnings before the start of market trading.

Tekelec's earnings were 27 cents per share for the quarter ending Dec. 31, beating analyst estimates of 23 cents per share.

Tekelec, the Morrisville telecom gear maker, continues to outmaneuver the recession with a strong balance sheet and a suite of products that phone companies need to function.

But investors cooled on Tekelec's stock amid fears that the company's heavy reliance on India for new business could drive down profit margins.

The company reported Wednesday that revenue from continuing operations was $114.2 million, down just 2 percent for the second quarter. Net income was up 9 percent to $16.8million, or 25 cents per share, and better than Wall Street analysts had expected.

The company is somewhat protected against recessionary swings because it sells essential operating software and gear to major phone companies and data service providers.

Tekelec has done well enough to avoid taking on debt, and it has avoided layoffs this year and last. The company's strategy is to grow through acquisitions.

Sales boost Tekelec earnings

Tekelec posted another strong quarter Wednesday, largely driven by a recovery in sales in North America.

Based on the sales boost and a rise in customer orders, the Morrisville technology company increased its guidance for the year, saying per share earnings would be between 95 cents and $1. Previously, the guidance had been between 90 cents and 95 cents.

"We had a very strong quarter in very challenging circumstances," said BillEverett, Tekelec's chieffinancial officer.

Tekelec stock up on healthy earnings

Tekelec, the Morrisville-based telecommunications equipment maker, posted a healthy first quarter even as its sales took a hit in the global recession.

The company is somewhat protected against recessionary swings because it sells essential operating software and gear to major phone companies and data service providers.

Still, its first quarter revenue fell 1 percent to $116.7 million and per share earnings fell 4 percent to 24 cents. More telling was the company's 18 percent drop in orders, which could reduce sales in future quarters if customers don't return to past spending levels.
