Capitol testing mobile live digital TV

You can watch TV in any room of the house, outside in the yard or even while you're camping. But you can't watch television while you're moving around.

This is a problem. Really. Just ask the folks at WRAL-TV and CBC New Media Group in Raleigh.

An invitation-only gathering of business leaders will get a glimpse Tuesday evening of how the New Media Group -- a division of Capitol Broadcasting Co. -- is trying to fill that need.

That's when the company will formally show off a hand-held device that can receive live digital television signals whether you are walking down the street or driving across town.

The needed gadget is a prototype, because it isn't yet commercially available in the United States. But it is fairly common to see people in Japan and Korea watching live TV on their cell phones. In the U.S., mobile video is typically canned or delivered by cell-phone carriers.

As the first commercial television station in the nation to broadcast high-definition television signals in 1996, Capitol Broadcasting doesn't plan to dally when receivers become available for live digital transmissions.

But unless you get an invitation to Tuesday's event at NCSU, you will need to wait until at least 2009 to watch it live. Now move on.
