Jordan Staal's 12th goal of the season has given the Canes a 1-0 lead after two periods at PNC Arena.
Staal scored his first goal in the past 11 games with 2:11 left in the first period. Alexander Semin caught Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh pinching at the blue line, chipping the puck into the zone. Staal took it from there, ripping a shortside shot past goalie Henrik Lundqvist on a two-on-one.
Canes goalie Anton Khudobin, making his 20th start in the Canes' past 23 games, stopped 15 shots in the opening period. Khudobin had several sparkling saves, including a strong stop on a shot by Benoit Pouliot with less than a minute left in the first.
