Three games in, and I have no clue how competitive Duke will be in the Coastal Division.
As was said last week, Duke can only play the hand its dealt…but, so far, the Blue Devils have played three awful, awful teams. Elon is 0-2, losing its first FCS game 17-12 to North Carolina A&T. Troy is 0-3, with a loss to FCS Abilene Christian, which is just two years removed from the Division II level. And Kansas—well, you saw Kansas on Saturday.
USA Today’s Paul Myerberg ranks Troy 122nd out of 128 FBS teams. Kansas comes in at No. 114. And Duke’s next opponent—Tulane—is ranked No. 106, having already lost to a Tulsa team ranked 104.

The Blue Devils are now 2-0, thanks to their 34-17 win at Troy last weekend. Of course, like in any game, some things worked and some things needed work.

The Blue Devils were able to put aside a quarter to forget and outscore the Trojans 31-3 over the final three quarters. Quarterback Anthony Boone started making more accurate throws and reads on option plays, including both his touchdown runs (30 yards in the second quarter, thanks to a nice block from Shaquille Powell, and 5 yards in the third).

Duke continues to lose veteran players at linebacker. Redshirt Senior C.J. France, who started at Will linebacker last week, is doubtful with a leg injury. Redshirt freshman Chris Holmes will make his first collegiate start in France's place. Holmes actually played more snaps (35) than France (26) in last week's 52-13 win over Elon.

Each week, I'll (hopefully) talk to a beat writer who covers Duke's opponent. Today, we are joined by Jeremy Wise, who covers Troy for the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle. You can follow Jeremy on Twitter here and read more of his work here. I also did a Q&A for his blog - you can find that here.
