An old favorite with a few nice upgrades

Restaurant Review: Team photos dating back to the days of leather football helmets hang so close together on the walls of the Players' Retreat that you can barely see the age-darkened wood paneling behind them. Hundreds of beer cans, some of them brands that haven't been brewed in decades, stand in neat rows on high, narrow shelves. Beer steins and mugs belonging to longtime regulars hang over the timeworn bar, where customers alternately chew the fat and watch the action on a couple of overhead TV screens.

Psst! The coast is clear. For the first time since Boylan Bridge Brewpub's much-anticipated opening a few months ago, it's possible to get a table on the patio when the weather is fair without staking out a spot hours in advance.

The local restaurant scene is a colorful, ever-changing, kaleidoscopic mirror of the backgrounds and tastes of our diverse population, but the reflection isn't always an accurate one.

Grand, from the sushi to the service

Restaurant Review: At eye level, there's little to distinguish Momoyama from any number of other strip mall Japanese restaurants.

Sports bars offer pub grub plus

Epicurean: After indulging in a pint or two from one of the 16 taps at Rally Point Sport Grill, chances are you'll find yourself wondering why the sink basins in the rest rooms are shaped like the state of Texas.

A vast menu leaves more rewards to discover

Dining Review: 'Are you here for the buffet?" It isn't a question, but a statement directed to our table of four by our waitress, even as she hands us menus.

The sublimely simple Lobster Roll

In the pantheon of American sandwiches, few can claim as many superlatives as the lobster roll. Lobster, the star ingredient of this New England classic, makes it a strong contender for the titles of most luxurious and most exotic.

New names a sign of new focus

Epicurean: What's in a name? Plenty, as the owners of two restaurants with well-known names in the Triangle can tell you. Both have tweaked the names of their restaurants to reflect a change in focus, while keeping the most recognizable part.
