Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr’s “Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia” (UNC Press, $39.95) tells the story spanning 400 years of how the music of Scotland and Ireland moved to the Southern Appalachians.
The book has illustrations and sidebars highlighting important figures, songs and instruments of roots music, as well as a CD featuring 20 songs from artists such as Pete Seeger, Dolly Parton, Dougie MacLean, Jean Ritchie and Sheila Kay Adams.
