Every year around this time, I start wondering about the Brantley Family Band, and it feels like a conjuring. Invariably, a day or two later I’ll hear from them with the latest installment of one of my favorite long-running holiday traditions, “The Brantley Family Band Christmas Album.”
The Brantleys moved on from the Triangle a few years back, which put Jim Brantley’s old band Bull City on ice. But they still find time to record Christmas music every year, which they send around to family and friends. This year’s selection is “Have Yourself a Very Merry XMAS,” a variation on the old Judy Garland chestnut “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and it features the recording debut of their five-month-old daughter Louise.
That brings the total number of songs the Brantleys have record and released to 39 (!) since 2004. You can sample and download them all here. At the very least, you should take a listen to their super-catch guitar-driven version of Vincent Guraldi’s “Charlie Brown Christmas” classic “Linus and Lucy” from 2009.
