WQDR-FM gets some CMA love for its morning show

Raleigh country station WQDR’s oft-nominated “Q Morning Crew” finally breaks through with a Country Music Association Broadcast Award.

Most mornings, deejay Mike Wheless is on the air at local country station WQDR, 94.7-FM, as part of the “Q Morning Crew.” Monday morning, however, Wheless took the day off because he’d just returned from his honeymoon and had some household chores to catch up on.

So of course, Monday morning is when word came that QDR’s morning show had won a Country Music Association Broadcast Award. Wheless and his partners, Marty Young and Janie Carothers, won the CMA’s “Large Market Broadcast Personality of the Year.” The Band Perry called the show to deliver the news on the air.

“I was literally folding socks when they called,” Wheless said. “We’ve been nominated five times before, so we’re used to being the bridesmaid. Everybody was in shock, including me, thinking they’d dialed the wrong number.”

Winning means a trip to Nashville next month. Wheless, Young and Carothers will walk the red carpet and get “a brief second of airtime” at the CMA Awards on Nov. 6.
