Carolina Blue plays 'Rocky Road Blues'

Pisgah Forest bluegrass band Carolina Blue plays “Rocky Road Blues” on the Courthouse Square in downtown Brevard where they’ve been playing every Tuesday evening since 2003. Mandolinist Tim Jones and guitarist Bobby Powell are the band's co-founders/co-leaders, and they’ve been playing together for nearly 20 years.

Wide Open Bluegrass heads indoors

After a quiet start to the week, Thursday night was the first time this year’s World of Bluegrass finally felt like what we were used to from the first two years. Enough people were circulating through the halls of the Raleigh Convention Center and adjacent Marriott Hotel for a critical mass of jam sessions to take hold and continue on into Friday.

From Japan, with love of bluegrass

Hiroshi Arakawa, a 24-year-old native of Hiroshima, Japan, is in Raleigh on a yearlong student visa to learn English and bluegrass, though not necessarily in that order. The English is coming along well enough, thanks to classes at Wake Technical Community College. This week, he’s immersed in the World of Bluegrass.

Bluegrass comes to Fox Road Elementary

Popular Bluegrass group Mipso from Chapel Hill, NC visits Fox Road Elementary School in northeast Raleigh Tuesday, September 29, 2015 to perform and answer questions from the over 300 Fox third, fourth and fifth grade students in the school gym. The event is part of the larger World of Bluegrass festival that is being held in downtown Raleigh this week.

Bluegrass Mass is performed at IBMA in Raleigh for the first time

The N.C. Master Chorale opens its 73rd season with debut performance of "The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass" at the Wide Open Bluegrass festival. Joined by five, string musicians, the 30 minute piece weaves classical, choral sounds with traditional bluegrass instruments for the debut performance at the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, October 3 at 5pm in the Raleigh Convention Center.
