New show: Manhattan Love Story
When: 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC
Cast: Analeigh Tipton, Jake McDorman
Premise: I can get past the gross-out vomit scene in the opening of “Selfie,” but I can’t quite get past the premise in this rom-com sitcom that a smart 20-something woman can’t competently use a smartphone or navigate Facebook without humiliating herself. I don’t know if it’s a bias against people from small towns (like the heroine, Dana) or against women in general, but it rubbed me the wrong way and by the end of the pilot, I still wasn’t over it.
Never miss a local story.
In “Manhattan Love Story,” Dana (Tipton) moves to The Big City to chase her dreams, moving in with her married best friend till she gets her bearings. The best friend has her husband set her up on a blind date with his best friend, Peter, a cad played by McDorman. Things get off to a bad start – Dana makes an unfortunate first impression and Peter makes fun of her – and then Peter is forced by his friend to try to make things right. You know the formula: they clash, clash, clash and then they fall in love.
The only thing really going for this is Tipton’s adorable Meg Ryan vibe in playing sweet (which doesn’t mean she has to be helpless!) Dana. She’s a lot of fun to watch (much more so than smug Peter) and viewers will root for her. So let’s hope the show – and Peter – improve enough to deserve her.
