What to Watch on Wednesday: ‘Chicago P.D.’ the latest NBC drama from Dick Wolf

In the premiere of this “Chicago Fire” spin-off following the men and women of the Chicago Police Department, the team discover an unexpected asset during their investigation into a drug-cartel cleaning house.

Chicago PD (10pm, NBC) - In the premiere of this “Chicago Fire” spin-off following the men and women of the Chicago Police Department, the team discover an unexpected asset during their investigation into a drug-cartel cleaning house. I strongly question the wisdom of centering a new show around one of the most disliked characters of another show ( Jason Beghe’s Sgt. Hank Voight), but after watching the first three episodes, I softened a bit. Jon Seda as Det. Antonio Dawson helps. Sophia Bush, Patrick Flueger and Elias Koteas are also pretty good here. It’s not the best Dick Wolf show ever, but it’ll do.

Also on tonight . . .

People’s Choice Awards (9pm, CBS) - Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings (perhaps better known as “2 Broke Girls”) host the 40th annual gala that recognizes fan favorites in movies, TV and music.

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - Phil lands in jail after a ruse to get Luke to sighn up for dance class backfires. Meanwhile, Jay and Glorida plan birthday parties for their two sons, but worry that Manny has unrealistic expectations when it comes to girls.

Psych (9pm, USA) - In the Season 8 opener (the musical episode over Christmas doesn’t count), Gus attends a Harry Potter convention in London.

Chasing Shackleton (10pm, UNC-TV) - The first of three parts covering the expedition led by environmental scientist Tim Jarvis as he attempts to re-create Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which launched in 1914 and met with disaster when his ship was crushed by ice and sank.

American Horror Story: Coven (10pm, FX) - Cordelia learns the truth about Hank and the witch hunters, while Madison tries to eliminate her competition.
