What to Watch on Wednesday: Judge Connick charms on new season of ‘American Idol’

If you are defenseless to the charms of Harry Connick Jr., go ahead and gear up for the new season of “American Idol.”

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - I’ve never been a big fan of “Idol” (or any of the singing/dancing reality competition shows), and in the past have only been driven to watch when locals were on there and really tearing it up (Hey Clay. Hey Scotty.). But I am defenseless to the charms of the show’s new judge, Harry Connick Jr., so my days of skipping “Idol” may be over. A screener DVD of Season 13’s preliminary auditions in Boston and Austin had me chuckling throughout (Connick is a thoughtful judge, but also a naturally funny dude), and one sequence near the end had me shaking with laughter. So take that as a “two thumbs up” from me on the new “American Idol” with judges Connick, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.

Suburgatory (8:30pm, ABC) - In the Season 3 premiere, George adopts a dog in an attempt to rebuild his relationship with Tessa. Meanwhile, Sheila tracks a canine on the loose in Chatswin, and Dalia shuns Dallas after her Dallas’ breakup with George.

Nova: Zeppelin Terror Attack (9pm, UNC-TV) - A look at the enormous, hydrogen-filled dirigibles that Germany used during World War I to bomb Britain, as well as the defense systems that Britain developed in an attempt to neutralize them.

Law & Order: SVU (9pm, NBC) - Amara wounds a teenager who’s a suspected drug dealer, but the case gets negative media attention. As Amaro wrestles with his conscience, he must also decide if fighting for his badge is worth it. Also, Cragen makes a shocking announcement (which means adios to another longtime L&O cast member).

Psych (9pm, USA) - Shawn discovers the missing link connecting a group of murder victims.

American Horror Story: Coven (10pm, FX) - Cordelia makes a sacrifice, while Fiona and Laveau face off with the Corporation.
