Film picks
OK, it's the day after Thanksgiving. You're still digesting food, and you did your usual Black Friday run to your nearest shopping center. Now, you're looking for some entertainment. Well, if you live in Chapel Hill, you can head back to the Varsity Theatre.
I know, I know - wasn't it closed, you ask? Yes, it was. But now it's open under new management, and it's celebrating its grand re-opening with daily showings of that 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz," at 1 p.m., 3:10 p.m., 5:20 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The theater will also have screenings of "The Informant!" and "The Invention of Lying." All showings are only $3. Details: www.varsityonfranklin.com .

Seven bad habits throttle careers
Lying on your résumé, stealing office supplies or failing to show up for work will surely dampen your career prospects.
But young workers need to beware of less-obvious mistakes that can sabotage their careers. Your behavior, attitude and appearance will play important roles in finding success, not only in your first job, but also throughout your entire working life.
As someone just starting out in the work world, you probably don't have a reputation yet. Take advantage of this blank slate. "You want to be seen as an up-and-comer, not the stereotypical young slacker," says Marty Nemko, a job coach in Oakland, Calif., and columnist for Kiplinger.com . Avoiding these seven career killers will help you craft a stellar reputation and keep your career on track.

With college looming, teen slackards need Mom to toughen up
Dear Carolyn: I am a mother of two girls, 16 and 13. They are both bright. Both of them, however, have a habit that drives me out of my mind.
Neither studies for exams properly. My older types exchanges on Facebook, while glancing at her textbook from time to time. For the younger one, substitute "watches television."
Both earn A's on homework and papers, then bomb their tests (C's and D's) and end up with B's as final grades. Their attitude is: "Get out of my business, Mom, I'll handle this the way I want." Meanwhile, I am thinking of how much I will have to sacrifice financially to send these two slackards to college, and my head is about to explode.

SAT follies
Here we go with the annual SAT score ritual (news story, Aug. 26). I have taught well over 10,000 students, and my opinion of this feckless examination is well-established.
The SAT is a lame excuse for rationalizing the rejection of prospective college students. I have known hundreds of brilliant, motivated students whose lives have been destroyed by these three-hour exercises in futility. Show me a resume and give me 10 minutes with a college candidate, and I will tell you his probable success with high confidence and accuracy.
If Daddy makes a lot of money, he sends you to a $3,000 prep course and pays to have you take this money-making waste of time five or more times and you end up with a 1750! However, you're spoiled, you have no motivation and you're immature.
