Plugging the holes that sap your savings

If rising gas and food prices and job uncertainty have you wishing that you had stashed some cash away for a rainy day -- it's not too late.

Even during a economic downturn, there are things people can do to free up extra cash to add to their savings, said Janet Fox-Kreielsheimer, a financial consultant and broker with ACH Investment Group in Raleigh.

"People must learn to make wiser long-term decisions concerning their finances," she said.

"They must avoid impulse purchases, which is the granddaddy of the black hole -- that's where your money disappears and you don't know what happened to it."

Here are some other things you can try to generate cash for savings:

* Map out your driving route like the large trucking companies do. Make sure you are taking the shortest route to your destination. Keep your car's maintenance up to date to get better gas mileage.

* Consolidate activities and errands into one trip. Carpool to social events, when possible.

* Take a hard look at your cable bill. Some people are paying $5 per cable box. If you eliminate one box, you could save $60 a year.

* Give up premium cable packages. Do you really watch 265 channels?

* Use as directed. Many people use more detergent and cleaning supplies than they need. Measure out the amount suggested on products so that they last longer.

* Try dry cleaning at home with an in-home dry cleaning product. This will save money on your dry cleaning bill.

* Consider eliminating your land-line phone and use only your cell phone if you live in an area that gets good cell phone reception.

* Get a membership at a discount warehouse store. But if you buy in bulk, be sure to use what you buy. Don't let items go to waste.

* Plan weekly or monthly menus. This will help keep your grocery budget in check. It will also help you to keep better track of what's in your cupboards and pantry to avoid duplicate purchases.

* Always take a shopping list and coupons to the grocery store. And stick to your list.

* Shop at discount and dollar stores for everyday items.

Not only will boosting your savings help ensure a more secure future, but think how much better you will feel when you don't have to stress about money.
