Thousands without power after storm

It will likely be early evening before thousands of Triangle residents get power restored to their homes and businesses.

Duke Energy spokeswoman Cathey Bennett said there are still 7,183 residents of Orange, Wake Chatham, Durham and Granville counties without power.

The majority of those — almost 6,400 residents — are in Durham County, where strong storms downed power lines and poles Friday night.

“They hope to have most of them restored later on this evening,” Bennett said this morning. “That’s just if all goes well — and, of course, no more storms.”

The delay in bringing power back online is simply because it takes time to repair the equipment, Bennett said.

“It’s just the extent of damage,” she said.
