A man was taken to Duke Hospital this afternoon after he apparently shot himself, Wake County sheriff's officials said this afternoon.

The man shot, who neighbors identified as Eric Jones, recently turned 21. John Kliensorge, who identified himself as a friend of the family's, said Jones' girlfriend came running through a wooded area near Wade Drive and N.C. 55, saying Jones was armed with a gun in the home at 6809 Wake Drive, just outside Apex.

Tax records suggest the home is a rental property.
