At 4:48 p.m. today, the 2008 state legislative session came to an end, having passed roughly 230 bills ranging from new penalties for gang activity to more help for people caught in the mortgage foreclosure freefall.

House Speaker Joe Hackney, an Orange County Democrat, drew laughs when he yelled "No!" in asking for yeahs and noes to the end of the session. He and Senate leader Marc Basnight rang bells that signify the session's end.

This was Hackney's first two-year term as speaker.

The final day's action saw agreement on drought response measures but lawmakers were not able to pass a temporary fix for the state health plan's finances.
