HARNETT COUNTY -- The Harnett County Sheriff's Office moved in on a clandestine marijuana growing operation today, seizing about 5,000 plants.

The value of a single, mature marijuana plant is about $2,400, making this crop worth about $12 million.

Sheriff Larry Rollins said it appeared six to eight people had been tending several plots in the heavily wooded area. Nobody has been found or arrested.

Sheriff Rollins said they were most likely tipped off about the sweep and took off before they could be caught.

Clearing began at the site this morning and continued this afternoon in a remote area near the community of Broadway.

This plot was about three miles from a much larger operation found a few weeks ago.
