The five colleges and universities in Raleigh account for about one-fourth of all wage and salary income in Wake County, according to study results released today by the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges.

A consortium of Meredith College, N.C. State University, Peace College, St. Augustine's College and Shaw University, the CRC commissioned the economic impact study to raise awareness among city, county and state officials who are in charge of some of the funding the schools receive.

The study, the first of its kind in Wake County, could also be a stepping stone toward more collaboration between CRC members and the city to, for example, put on events in downtown Raleigh or provide community services, said Jenny Spiker, CRC director.

Michael Walden, an economist and professor at NCSU, conducted the study.
